English 11 Mastery Work #1 People from New York, People from Brooklyn 1ST Draft Due: Thursday Sept. 27   2ND Draft Due: Thursday Oct. 11 Overview: For the last few weeks, you have been reading, writing, talking, and thinking about New York.  What is New York? Who is a New Yorker? Is Brooklyn a city? A borough? It’s own “country”? 
The Situation: You are part of a student delegation from the High School for Public Service taking part in a summit meeting for high school students in Little Rock, Arkansas, hosted by Bill Clinton.  Each delegation has been asked to give a presentation about where they are from and the people who live there.  You have been asked to make the presentation from HSPS, but you aren’t sure whether to talk about New York City or Brooklyn.  Politicians, educators, and writers from across the country will be evaluating your presentations. 

Choose ONE of the two tasks below for your Mastery Work,

Task A or B (not both). Task A:  Using relevant information from at least one text, one poem, and one graphic that we have studied, write a speech you would make at the summit meeting about where your delegation is from.  First, it is up to you to decide if your delegation is from New York City (all 5 boroughs, including Brooklyn) or just Brooklyn. Then, write a speech where you define where you are from and the people who live there.  Task B:  Using relevant information from at least one text, one poem, and one graphic that we have studied, write a speech you would make at the summit about the complexity of your borough, Brooklyn, and how it is both a part of New York City yet very different from Manhattan.  Guidelines:Be sure to
  • Tell your audience what it needs to know about Brooklyn or New York City.
  • Tell you audience what it needs to know about the people that live there.
  • Use specific and accurate information from a text, poem, and either a graph, table, or photograph. 
  • Use a tone and level of language that is appropriate for such an important forum.
  • DOUBLE SPACE YOUR ESSAY; DO NOT WRITE ON THE BACK OF THE PAPER OR IN THE MARGINS.
  • Put your full name in the heading, with the date, the class, and the assignment.
  • Include a title and page numbers.  
  • Organize you ideas in a logical and coherent manner, including the use of a THESIS, TOPIC SENTENCES, and the use of a CONCLUSION (that does not use the phrase “In conclusion…”).
  • Indicate any words taken directly from the text by using quotation marks and referring to the author.
  • Follow the conventions of standard written English.
